No Progress Made in Peace Talk Efforts

A peace mission by U.S. envoy Richard Holbrooke failed to find a formula for resuming negotiations on reunifying this Mediterranean island. A source close to Holbrooke said Turkish Cypriots were adamant that sovereignty of their self-declared state in northern Cyprus be recognized before talks resume. Diplomats said Holbrooke today was expected to urge the two sides to show determination to find a solution before he returns for another mediation round. Ethnic Greeks and Turks on Cyprus have been separated by a U.N.-policed buffer zone since Turkish troops invaded the north in 1974 after a brief Greek-inspired coup in Nicosia, the capital.
