Robert H. McKaig, a longtime Santa Paula dentist and civic leader, died last week after a lengthy illness. He was 76.
McKaig was born in South Dakota. His family moved to Los Angeles during the Great Depression. McKaig attended Los Angeles Polytechnic High before enlisting in the Air Force during World War II. Climbing to the rank of captain, he flew a C-47 transport plane and served as a flight instructor.
After the war, McKaig enrolled in the University of Southern California’s dental school, graduating in 1952. Two years later, he moved to Santa Paula, where he practiced dentistry for 28 years before retiring.
At the same time, he served on several local civic boards and groups, including the Santa Paula Elementary School Board, the Lions Club and the Cub Scouts. An avid sportsman, he loved fishing and golf.
He is survived by his wife, Alice McMahan of Santa Paula; two sons, Michael of Santa Paula and Dan of Sonoma; two daughters, Paula of Ventura and DeDe of Walnut Creek; a sister, Grace Vining, of Canyon Lake; and numerous grandchildren.
