Fetal Abuse Law
Re “Wisconsin OKs Civil Detention for Fetal Abuse,” May 2: I read with horror that Wisconsin is preparing to follow South Dakota, where by law women may be “confined” (read “imprisoned”) and involuntarily treated for “almost the entire period of their pregnancy.”
These totalitarian laws must be opposed, and not only on liberty grounds. Under them, women who even sometimes use alcohol or proscribed drugs will avoid doctors, the states’ designated pregnancy police. Lack of prenatal care for the many will cause more harm than the enforced sobriety of the few will avoid. Women who are nevertheless captured may achieve freedom by aborting. Even wild-eyed liberals may concede that the fetus is better addicted than dead.
