Wachs Proposes Market, Scenic Corridor

Los Angeles City Councilman Joel Wachs proposed two motions Wednesday aimed at improving communities in the northeast and southeast San Fernando Valley.

One motion calls for the establishment of a farmers’ market in Studio City on weekends. The other asks the city to draft a “scenic highways corridor specific plan” to set guidelines for protecting the Verdugo and San Gabriel mountains near Sunland, Tujunga, Lake View Terrace, La Tuna Canyon and Shadow Hills.

The farmers’ market motion asks that city departments waive fees and costs associated with shutting down a street for a market.

If approved, the market would be held on Ventura Place, between Laurel Canyon and Ventura boulevards on Saturday or Sunday morning. Farmers’ markets throughout Los Angeles usually operate one day a week and offer consumers farm produce and crafts.

The scenic corridor motion aims to place controls on growth in the mountain region to prevent visual blight and protect environmentally sensitive areas from “‘overly aggressive development,” Wachs said.

The plan would address future development, billboards, grading, landscaping and parking; focus on preserving views of ridgelines, domes and spurs; and make provisions for recreational use of mountain lands, such as hiking and bicycling.
