Ballots in City Auditor’s Race to Be Recounted Today

A candidate in the city auditor’s race is requesting a ballot recount in the April 14 election.

The recount will begin today at City Hall after William Molnar, who lost by 1,833 votes, said he suspected one of the balloting machines might have malfunctioned.

Molnar, a certified public accountant who received 16,164 votes, was defeated by incumbent Gary Burroughs, who won with 17,997 votes.

Only ballots in 20 of the city’s 180 precincts will be tallied. The recount should take one day.

“We are looking at precincts that showed unusual voting patterns,” Molnar said Wednesday. The candidate is asking the city clerk to examine balloting in precincts that had abnormally high votes for Burroughs and where people did not mark their ballots for city auditor but voted for other offices.

Molnar must pay at least $3,817 a day for the recount, said Linda Kelly, chief deputy city clerk.
