FIRST QUARTER: SUPERSONICS 26, LAKERS 19

Share

* Highlight Reel: Finally figured out who Seattle Coach George Karl looks like. It’s no woman either. It’s the SuperSonics’ shaggy-haired Big Foot mascot. And speaking of big feet, Seattle’s Sam Perkins came off the bench and placed his on the Lakers’ throats in a eight-point quarter.

* What You Won’t Find in the Box Score: Kobe Bryant’s name, for one thing. Bryant came down with a touch of flu and was scratched for Game 2.

* Winning Number: Shaquille O’Neal had 10 of the Lakers’ 19 points in the quarter.

* Wrong Number: Forwards Perkins and Vin Baker combined for 16 points, countering O’Neal’s good start.

* Leading Scorers: Lakers: O’Neal 10; SuperSonics: Baker 8, Perkins 8.

* Leading Rebounders: Lakers: Rick Fox 3; SuperSonics: Schrempf 4.

SECOND QUARTER: LAKERS 44, SUPERSONICS 37

* Highlight Reel: Hey, that’s Bill Gates seated courtside. Insert your own computer nerd joke here, but remember he’s a rich computer nerd. Even Gates had to like Van Exel’s lob pass to O’Neal for a dunk to cap a fastbreak and give the Lakers a 37-35 lead late in the quarter.

* What You Won’t Find in the Box Score: O’Neal’s domination over the shorter SuperSonics finally became evident in the quarter. Baker is simply no match for O’Neal, and with Seattle’s guards Hersey Hawkins and Gary Payton muzzled, the Lakers grabbed the lead.

* Winning Number: Lakers held Seattle to 16-of-40 shooting for the half.

* Wrong Number: Another three-pointer for Perkins.

* Leading Scorers: Lakers: O’Neal 10; SuperSonics: Baker 3, Perkins 3.

* Leading Rebounders: Lakers: 3 with 3; SuperSonics: Detlef Schrempf 3.

LAKERS 64, SUPERSONICS 49

* Highlight Reel: O’Neal’s tip-in in the dying seconds of the quarter ensured the Lakers wouldn’t falter in the fourth, as they did in Game 1. It was just the sort of energy jolt that soon turned the game into a blowout.

* What You Won’t Find in the Box Score: Many points for the SuperSonics, who followed up an 11-point second quarter with a 12-point third.

* Winning Number: Lumbering galoot Jim McIlvaine led the SubSonics with four points, which is all you need to know about the Lakers’ superiority.

* Wrong Number: Lakers outscored Seattle, 20-12, in the quarter.

* Leading Scorers: Lakers: Eddie Jones 7; SuperSonics: McIlvaine 4.

* Leading Rebounders: Lakers: Corie Blount 7; SuperSonics: Baker 4.

LAKERS 92, SUPERSONICS 68

* Highlight Reel: Robert Horry applied the finishing touches to the Lakers’ rout with a smooth drive, dunk and a free throw after a foul. Another Horry dunk a moment later gave the Lakers a 28-point lead. It was pretty much in the fridge by then.

* What You Won’t Find in the Box Score: Smiles all over the court as the Lakers escaped noisy KeyArena with a split.

* Winning Number: Lakers held SubSonics to 25-for-76 shooting.

* Wrong Number: SubSonics’ 68 points were the fewest scored by the franchise in its playoff history.

* Leading Scorers: Lakers: Horry, Jones 7; SuperSonics: Jerome Kersey 7.

* Leading Rebounders: Lakers: Four tied with 2; SuperSonics: Five tied with 1.
