Candidate Halts Recount as Tally Finds Few Errors
A recount requested by a candidate for city auditor was over by noon Thursday after the tally showed there was little difference from the original ballot count.
William Molnar, who garnered 47.3% of the vote in the April 14 election, asked for the recount because he suspected one of the balloting machines malfunctioned.
City officials recounted ballots in 16 of the city’s 180 precincts, showing that Molnar gained 3 votes and his opponent, City Auditor Gary Burroughs, received 4 more votes than in the original tabulation.
Molnar requested the recount stop at noon, said Linda Kelly, chief deputy city clerk.
The additional votes for each candidate were caused by ballot cards being partially punched and not counted the first time they were tallied.
Molnar had to pay the city $1,728 for the recount, Kelly said.
