Re “A Maker or Breaker of Community?” May 3.

I have lived in Van Nuys for nearly 30 years. I had heard that a Van Nuys Homeowners Assn. existed but was never able to find information about [it]. Then The Times’ “Today’s Agenda” announced that the [group] would meet. I decided to attend.

There were about 50 to 60 people in attendance. I was the only person who resided east of Sepulveda Boulevard. Several pamphlets were available along with a card offering membership. I brought the card home, completed the information, checked the box indicating I would serve on a committee and mailed it with my check for $25.00, the annual fee. That was the last contact I had with the association. They did cash my check.

Is it any wonder that when I found that a group east of my neighborhood was planning to change their community name to Valley Glen that I started a movement to join them? Our neighbors banded together and garnered signatures of 80% of residents of single-family homes who wanted [the name change]. It is difficult to see a community deteriorate, but without involvement by caring, dedicated people it happens.
