New Storm Expected to Dump Rain, Snow

An incoming storm is expected to hit Ventura County during rush hour this morning, meanwhile dumping up to 4 inches of snow on county mountaintops.

The rain could last through Wednesday, extending a string of May storms that has impressed weather forecasters--even in this season of El Nino.

“This is pretty rare,” said Kevin Stenson, a meteorologist with WeatherData Inc., which supplies forecasts to The Times. “It’s been quite an unusual May.”

Today’s storm is expected to begin with showers about 6 a.m., with afternoon thunderstorms forecast. It could dump up to an inch on parts of the county. Snow is expected in the mountains at heights of 4,500 feet. Around the county, daytime temperatures ranging from 63 degrees in Thousand Oaks to 70 degrees in Ojai are forecast.

A low-pressure ridge moving south from the Gulf of Alaska is driving the latest storm front. The unstable weather is also stalling the buildup of the annual “June gloom,” the fog arising from a combination of high pressure and rising temperatures, Stenson said.

“You’ll still see it,” he said. “It may just develop a little later than in normal years.”
