Public Pools Advised to Install Device

Share

The Ventura County Environmental Health Division is advising that owners and operators of public swimming pools install a device that can prevent electrical shocks.

Officials recommend the device, known as a ground-fault circuit interrupter, be installed on underwater pool lights by July 1 to be in compliance with a state law passed in October.

The new law requires that underwater light fixtures that operate at more than five volts in public swimming pools, spas, wading pools and special-use pools be equipped with the circuit interrupters.

Additionally, all terminals inside public swimming pool light fixtures are to be encapsulated to prevent water from entering.

Public swimming pools that already have the equipment installed must be inspected by Sept. 1 to verify compliance.

Local building departments will require a permit to install the device.
