Tricia Nichols has been named winner of the 1998 Amelia Earhart Award for Individual Leadership in recognition of her work to improve the lives of women and young girls.

UCI Extension’s Women’s Opportunities Center will present the award at the Irvine Hyatt Regency on May 20 at 11:30 a.m. during the center’s largest fund-raiser, the Amelia Earhart Awards Luncheon.

Nichols began her pursuit in 1972 when she traveled to Paraguay as a Peace Corps volunteer. There she helped to build a school, established the region’s first library, formed a leather products company to help poor women become economically independent and taught nutrition and family planning for the Ministry of Health.
