Thomas T. Tierney, a businessman and philanthropist, has been elected chairman of the UCI Foundation for a two-year term.

The UCI Foundation is a volunteer organization that, among other things, provides strategic advice to UCI officials, helps raise funds for research and scholarships and manages private investments on the university’s behalf.

Tierney, 59, president of Vita Tech International and chair and chief executive officer of Body Wise International, has served the foundation since 1993. He succeeds Thomas H. Nielsen, managing director of U.S. Trust in Costa Mesa, who has served as chair since 1996.

A frequent contributor, Tierney and his wife, Elizabeth, donated $260,000 in 1985 to endow a lifetime chair in peace studies, the first in the UC system.
