Board OKs Lease for Golf Course Project

Hoping to boost park revenues, the county Board of Supervisors unanimously approved an agreement Tuesday allowing a Malibu-based developer to build two golf courses at Toland Park near Santa Paula.

The deal will allow Crumpler & Kruger Real Estate Inc. and golf course designer Robert Cupp to build an 18-hole regulation course and a nine-hole, par three course. The company, which is proceeding with a plan to build a golf course in the Tierra Rejada Valley near Moorpark, has pledged to invest about $10.3 million in the Toland Park project, according to a county report.

The lease between the county and Crumpler & Kruger should generate about $600,000 a year by the courses’ fifth year of operation, the report said.

Supervisor Judy Mikels hailed the agreement as a positive step in the county’s efforts to creatively generate money to fund its park operations. She urged anyone who had concerns about the proposal or wanted to be a part of the planning process to get involved now--not wait until it’s underway.

“If you’re not at the table now, we don’t want to hear from you later,” Mikels said.
