A man who had been shot in the chest died early Tuesday after being found lying along Pacific Coast Highway, authorities said.

The unidentified man was discovered after two motorists pulled over about 11 p.m. Monday. Both saw his body just south of Sycamore Cove, about seven miles from the Los Angeles County border.

Paramedics and California Highway Patrol officers tried to revive the man with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but he was pronounced dead at 12:20 a.m. after being flown by helicopter to St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard.

He had been shot once in the chest, officials said.

Authorities were still at the scene collecting evidence Tuesday morning. The man carried no identification, appeared to be about 35, and was wearing blue jeans and a T-shirt, officials said.

Officials said they were not sure whether he had been shot at the scene or wounded elsewhere and brought to the unincorporated part of Ventura County south of Point Mugu.

Sheriff’s officials are asking anyone with information to step forward.

“The key we are looking for right now is for anyone who may have been driving down PCH, and saw anything suspicious” to provide information, said Sheriff’s Capt. Keith Parks.
