O.C. Athletic Directors Nominate Top Athletes

The Orange County Athletic Directors Assn. has announced its nominations for the boy and girl athlete of the year awards, which will be presented May 27 at the group’s dinner at the Anaheim Convention Center.

The leagues and their nominees:

Academy--Ryan Allen (Capistrano Valley Christian) and Amber Arnold (St. Margaret’s); Century--Charlie Williams (El Modena) and Jessica Dahlberg (El Modena); Empire--Mike Morales (Loara) and Jihan Elgazzar (Kennedy); Freeway--Jonathan Ryan West (Sonora) and Allison Nicholas (Sunny Hills); Garden Grove--David Vickers (Rancho Alamitos) and Amanda Freed (Pacifica); Golden West--DeShaun Foster (Tustin) and Julia Wald (Rosary).

Olympic--Pat Cadwallader (Brethren Christian) and Christy Ring (Calvary Chapel); Orange--Rasuli Webster (Brea Olinda) and Etta Jackson (Magnolia); Pacific Coast--Sam Nelson (Estancia) and Julie Collett (Costa Mesa); Sea View--Carson Palmer (Santa Margarita) and Mary Moore (Woodbridge); South Coast--Mike McNair (Mater Dei) and Sarah Higham (Mission Viejo); Sunset--Matt Komer (Los Alamitos) and Jackie Frank (Los Alamitos).

Catherine Solorio of Brea Olinda has signed to play basketball at Azusa Pacific. Solorio, a 5-7 guard who was a co-captain, averaged 8.3 points per game for Brea Olinda, the state Division III champion.

Canyon graduate Nina Lindenberg and Villa Park graduate Brandee McArthur were named to the All-West Region Softball teams.

Lindenberg, a senior second baseman at Fresno State, made the first team. McArthur was voted to the second team as a utility player from Pacific.

Also honored: Cal State Fullerton designated player Brenda Iglesias (first team) and utility player Kristy Osborne (second team).

Scott Weber, a 14-year-old from Westminster, won a national title in floor exercise at the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympics men’s championships Sunday in Battle Creek, Mich.

Weber, a freshman at Ocean View, scored a personal-best 9.8 in the floor to win the Level 2 title. He won the Level 3 title last year. He also finished fourth in the vault.
