Reading Day Eases Pupils Into Summer

Share

As a kickoff for summer, students at Poinsettia Elementary School on Friday brought sunglasses, hats, beach blankets and snacks to school and sat outside reading books.

About 530 students from kindergarten through fifth grade participated in the school’s first Read and Relax Day.

Children brought their favorite books from home and books they made in class throughout the year for the one-hour break. Older students paired up with younger students to read to them.

“We’re trying to promote reading, sunshine, being outdoors and reading books as a pastime for summer,” said Lori Spiessl the kindergarten teacher who organized the event.

Students made books on variety of topics, including seasons, farm animals and insects. “The whole school sat outside and shared the books they made,” Spiessl said.

Spiessl plans to make Read and Relax Day an annual event.
