MOVIES

“Godzilla” is back, but this time the enormous fire-breathing lizard intends to stamp out New York instead of Tokyo, as he did way back in the 1954 low-budget original. Roland Emmerich directs this mega-buck version, which stars Matthew Broderick and France’s Jean Reno. It opens Wednesday.

MOVIES

“The Opposite of Sex” stars Christina Ricci as a troubled teen who, in moving in with her half-brother, wreaks havoc on the lives of many, including Lisa Kudrow and Lyle Lovett. Also with Johnny Galecki and Ivan Sergei, the film, written and directed by Don Roos, opens Friday.

THEATER

Marie Osmond reprises her Broadway role as the refined English governess Anna and Victor Talmadge is the imperious, stubborn monarch of Siam in the national tour of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The King and I,” opening Tuesday for a two-week run at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood.

MUSIC

Music director James Levine and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra arrive tonight at UCLA’s Royce Hall with a program meant for orchestral display: Rossini’s Overture to “Semiramide,” the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto (with soloist Vadim Repin) and Suite No. 2 from Ravel’s “Daphnis et Chloe.”

More than 50 Los Angeles artists including Martha Alf, Chuck Arnoldi, Guy Dill and Didi Dunphy open their private studios and homes to the public for today’s 19th annual Venice Art Walk ‘98, a day of self-guided studio tours, art exhibitions and arts activities to benefit the Venice Family Free Clinic.

Smilin’ Jack Nicholson won his third Oscar portraying a prejudiced, obsessive-compulsive romance writer in James L. Brooks’ hit “As Good as It Gets.” Helen Hunt was named best actress for her role as a waitress with an asthmatic young son. The romantic comedy arrives in video stores Tuesday.

POP MUSIC

The R&B; vocal quartet Boyz II Men is out on the road promoting “Evolution,” its latest multimillion-selling collection of silky smooth harmonies. The Philadelphia foursome plays tonight at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood and again Tuesday night at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre.

POP MUSIC

In a baby boomer’s dream lineup, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and road-shy Joni Mitchell share the bill Thursday and Friday at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion and Saturday at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim. Mitchell, who has played only a handful of shows in the past 15 years, last toured in 1983.
