Foot-in-Mouth Syndrome at Nike

Nike Chairman Philip Knight says it’s impossible to turn a profit from producing shoes in the U.S. [“Oakley Turns Its Eyes to the Athletic Footwear Market,” May 13].

Just what exactly is the definition of “profit” these days? The man embodies the expression “filthy rich.”

Knight is also reported to have said that high-volume manufacturing can’t keep prices affordable using domestic plants. Oh, are Nikes affordable?

Knight is concerned with Nike’s “reputation,” but apparently not morality, as he promises to raise the minimum age of some workers to 16 and 18. Of course, he still makes no mention of a living wage for his employees.
