Vehicle License Fees

Re “A Penny Saved Could Be Fiscal Catastrophe,” May 10.

Moorpark Mayor Patrick Hunter claims dire consequences if the vehicle license fees are rescinded. There are several misperceptions that show Mr. Hunter is standing on the firm ground of ignorance.

First, the bills referred to in his column have offsets to cover any possible loss of revenue to the cities and counties, including a constitutional protection of like sums.

Another and more egregious error is Hunter’s condemnation of Proposition 13.

Mr. Hunter also uses the politician’s scare tactic by referring to “public safety and crime prevention” and “drastic curtailment of fundamental services.” The primary job of government is the protection of its citizens, not parks and recreation. Therefore the last, not first, cuts go to “fundamental” citizen protection. No politician who wants to keep his job would do otherwise.
