The Right Way to Treat Immigrants

Share

* Having read your May 6 story, “A Sign of Continuing Anger Among Prop. 187’s Sponsors,” I must say that at times I am ashamed to live in Orange County.

But at the same time, I am happy to live here because I know that there are many others residing here, like me, who can see and try to understand the sad, narrow thinking and frustration that these poor limited people must suffer.

I can only imagine the feelings of some of their ancestors, German, Irish, Italian, Chinese, etc., who may have experienced similar wrath expressed by those who came here prior to them, legal or illegal.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about “immigration.” That word implies a legal entry into the country. Anyone who enters otherwise is simply a criminal. And that goes for Britons or anyone else, as well as those from Mexico.

The freeway signs that have caused such a furor are correct. Those who champion “immigrants’ rights” need to think again--criminals usually forfeit all but the basic human rights by committing a crime.

For that matter, I feel somewhat the same about those who move to California and continue to carry out-of-state license plates. Those plates may be cheaper, but it’s California’s roads that get the wear and tear from their vehicles. I say let anyone who wants to come and benefit from this state--but do it right or don’t do it at all.
