Sturdy Tractor Simple to Build

Share

Many children dream of living on a farm, even if they’ve never left the city. There’s so much for a child to do on a farm, with plenty of room to run around, animals to tend and, of course, tractors to ride.

Here’s a do-it-yourself version of the trusty tractor designed especially for youngsters. Made primarily from one 4-by-8 sheet of exterior plywood, it features a simple rope-and-column steering mechanism, realistic control knobs and engine panels, a wide tractor seat and even an exhaust stack. Foot power drives this safe, sturdy toy.

Although the tractor project calls for many parts, it’s still simple to build. All the pieces are traced from full-size patterns, cut and marked for easy identification during assembly. Assembly proceeds from rear to front, using nuts, bolts, washers, wood screws and finishing nails. After the parts are put together, rough edges are sanded and paint is applied.

The finished tractor measures 36 inches long by 18 inches high by 19 inches wide. It’s designed with wooden wheels, but store-bought rubber tires can be used for a smoother, longer-wearing ride.

The tractor plan, No. 610, is $6.95 and includes complete step-by-step instructions with photos, full-size traceable patterns, exploded diagrams and a shopping list and cutting schedule.
