Re “Hollywood Belongs to the World,” Commentary, May 13:

Derek Shearer’s statement that “the globalization of culture is overwhelmingly a good thing” is a mockery of global conceptual thought. The world is a unity of diverse cultures and if anything should be globalized, it is the concept of respect for diversity!

Shearer uses Hollywood movies and TV to support his thesis, yet he conveniently leaves out the “dark side” of Hollywood--the cult of celebrity, war, violence, guns, drugs, sex and sadism. Is Shearer out to get Jack Valenti’s job?

Hollywood does so belong to America. Hollywood does so impact foreign culture and politics. Anybody who has a problem with that, don’t watch our films or buy our music. Hooray for Hollywood and long live America!
