Turner Cash Goes to U.N. Population Fund
Much of the first money allocated from Ted Turner’s $1-billion gift to the United Nations will go to the U.N. Population Fund, an agency known for being unpopular with Congress. Nearly $8 million will be earmarked for programs of the Population Fund, which has been attacked by conservative congressmen for supporting family planning. In the allocation, 42% of the money will go to women’s programs. A Population Fund program aimed at improving reproductive health in the Philippines will receive $2 million. Money will also go to disarm child soldiers in Sierra Leone and to help victims of land mines.
