Alzheimer’s Care Facility Closed After Report of Beating

State officials closed down a Claremont Alzheimer’s care facility Thursday after discovering that a client had been badly beaten there. The California Department of Social Services revoked the license of Mountain View Alzheimer’s Center at 715 W. Baseline Road and ordered the staff off the premises, but will allow the 20 clients to be cared for in the facility by family members until May 26.

An official said the department received an anonymous tip April 14 that a resident at the facility was beaten. An investigation found that a patient had been beaten by an unidentified assailant and suffered trauma and bruises on the face and hand. Along with the Claremont facility, the department investigated five others run by the same operator, Smita Sanghvi, and found a pattern of failure to report injuries to clients as required.

The official said the department intends to close the five other Mountain View guest home facilities, located in Diamond Bar, Claremont and Covina, after the transfer of clients to other homes. Thirty patients live at the five homes.
