In an annual program to support education, Edison International recently announced $446,000 in scholarships to Southland students, including 34 in Orange County.

The Orange County students will receive $116,000 in grants, ranging from $1,000 to $20,000 each.

Among the local students awarded were Faiz Ahmed of Irvine, Andrew Bradley of Huntington Beach and Alison Moody of Tustin, who will receive $20,000 each for college.

This year, Edison awarded scholarships to 145 high school, community college and university students throughout Southern California.

Students applying for the award must live in the 50,000-square-mile area Edison services and must prove academic excellence, said Virginia Valencia, Edison’s program manager. Students turn in their applications to campus counselors, who then select one student to represent the school.

Since 1993, more than $10 million had been awarded in the company’s program.
