Boeing Urges 747 Fuel Tank Checks
Boeing Co. said it has recommended inspection of center fuel tanks aboard 747 jetliners and urged operators to replace some parts, in moves that stemmed from the crash of TWA Flight 800, which killed all 230 people aboard off New York nearly two years ago. Operators were urged to check wiring and grounding straps, pumps, fuel lines and fittings and to install so-called flame arresters. Boeing said the service bulletins are to alert airlines to possible Federal Aviation Administration requirements. Boeing said inspections of center wing tanks on 213 of the approximately 1,000 jetliners in service have turned up no significant problems.
