30,000 Child-in-Car Safety Tickets Written
Police across the country wrote more than 30,000 tickets in the first three days of a crackdown on drivers who fail to make sure children are buckled up.
The weeklong campaign began with more than 4,000 law enforcement agencies taking part on Monday.
The National Safety Council said Friday that a sampling of participating agencies showed more than 30,000 child passenger safety citations issued in the first three days.
Tens of thousands more tickets are expected to be issued through the Memorial Day weekend, the council said.
“Why not educate drivers? Well, we want to do that too. But when it doesn’t work, a ticket does,” said Ricardo Martinez, head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Auto crashes kill 1,800 American children every year and are the leading cause of death for children younger than 15.
