New Coin to Replace Anthony Dollar

From Times Wire Reports

Susan B. Anthony might have been a great women’s leader, but as a coin she was a bust. So Congress has ordered a new, gold-colored $1 coin to replace the ill-fated one on which Anthony’s image appears. Treasury Secretary Robert E. Rubin declared last week that the new coin, to be issued in 2000, should offer the image of “one or more women” but not a living person. Whose image? Anthony could make a comeback if Rubin endorses a suffragette theme being discussed by coin collectors. Other candidates include Eleanor Roosevelt, the Statue of Liberty, Indian guide Sacajawea and the allegorical figure of Liberty.
