Two local teachers have won spots at a summer institute on U.S. Supreme Court law in Washington, D.C., organizers said.

Street Law Inc. and the Supreme Court Historical Society, both Washington-based organizations, selected Carye Goodman, an advanced placement government teacher at Birmingham High School, and Ellen Brown, a social studies teacher at Grant High School, to attend the institute at the Georgetown University Law Center from June 25 to 30.

“I’m beyond excited,” said Goodman, who was selected from among roughly 500 applicants nationwide. “My passion has always been the Supreme Court.”

Goodman and Brown will join 28 other teachers from around the country in the weeklong seminar.

Jen Fordyce, an administrative assistant for Street Law, said the participants will learn methods to help teach their students about the law.

Fordyce said Goodman and Brown will study and analyze past and current cases before the Supreme Court. After reviewing and debating the cases, the teachers will get a chance to watch Supreme Court justices issue their opinions on them.

The teachers will also have a chance to attend receptions with the justices.

“To actually go and meet the justices is a dream of mine,” Goodman said. “I’m just amazed.”
