Program Aids Seniors at Risk of Falling

Share

Senior citizens who may be at risk for falls are being sought for balance and mobility assessments at five senior centers throughout north Orange County.

Once participants are tested, they may be eligible for a free six-week program aimed at helping them reduce their risk of falling. The program is sponsored by Cal State Fullerton.

“Approximately one-third of people over 65 fall at least once each year, resulting in injuries,” said Dr. C. Jessie Jones, director of the university’s LifeSpan Wellness Clinic. “Many of the risk factors associated with falls, such as muscle weakness, poor coordination, decreased cardiovascular function, . . . balance irregularities, delayed reaction and movement time, can be prevented or [remedied] through proper assessment and intervention.”
