Top military athletes will converge on Point Mugu’s Naval Air Weapons Station June 6 for the 1998 Armed Forces Triathlon Championships, an endurance race to determine a team for the upcoming World Games.

The base will play host for the first time to 50 men and 20 women vying for six spots on a military team to represent the United States at the World Games in Belgium June 23-27, said Doris Lance, a Point Mugu spokeswoman.

“We are a natural setting for a triathlon,” Lance said Wednesday. “We have the Pacific Ocean, and we have a good, flat course for a bike race and a run.”

The race starts at 8 a.m. with a 1 1/2-kilometer swim. Contestants will then pedal 40 kilometers before running 10 kilometers. Spectators are welcome.

The triathletes are all active-duty military personnel representing the U.S. Air Force, Army, Marine Corps and Navy.

There are no local entrants, but competitors will include Maj. Michael Hagen, who is stationed at Ft. Bragg and was recently named the U.S. Amateur Triathlete of the Year by the U.S. Triathlete Federation.

The World Games is an international military competition. Other events include volleyball, basketball, soccer and boxing.
