NBC, Turner Present Plan for a New Football League

NBC chose halftime of Wednesday night’s Chicago-Indiana NBA playoff game to announce that it and Turner Sports will form their own football league.

Hannah Storm read a statement making the announcement.

The two television entities, which lost the NFL to CBS and ESPN, had said last winter that they were exploring the possibility.

The league, if it comes to fruition, will start in the fall of 1999 and have between 10 and 12 teams that will play games on Sundays on NBC and Sunday nights on TNT.

After losing out to Fox four years ago, CBS explored an alternative pro football league, then scrapped the idea.

A CBS spokeswoman said her network had no comment about NBC’s announcement.
