Peace Vote in N. Ireland

Share

The peace agreement won in Ireland is an incredible milestone (May 24). Achieving peace even in our own daily lives with family and friends is a challenge. The Rev. Ian Paisley really needs to accept the fact that peace is inevitable and is long overdue. Too many innocent people from both sides have lost their lives for a struggle that to the average layperson seems worthless and idealistic. Gerry Adams of Sinn Fein is to be commended for his rational response to the various naysayers. Yes, peace is possible even in Ireland.

I am a resident of the Earth, I’m not Irish, British or Catholic. I do applaud the vote that took place in Northern Ireland. We in the U.S. for many years have been discussing the “global economy”; what I believe we need to discuss is, instead, “global residence.”

The actions of any people affect everyone. From space looking down at the Earth there are no boundaries, no lines where one country starts and another stops. Our humanity is the only thing that is important. I am grateful to the citizens of Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic for lighting the candle instead of cursing the darkness.
