As part of its monthlong celebration of Asian Pacific Islander Month, Cal State Northridge today will host a variety show featuring cultural performances from Asian and Pacific Island countries.

Song and dance performances representing China, Korea, India, the Philippines, Tonga, Tahiti, Samoa and Hawaii will highlight Asian Pacific Heritage Night, sponsored by the San Fernando Valley Chinese Culture Assn., the Asian American Business Assn. and the China Institute at CSUN.

“It’s a showcase of Asian Pacific heritage, and those attending can find out how rich these cultures are,” said Kwang-nan Chow, a volunteer for the China Institute who also teaches mathematics at CSUN.

Kicking off the program will be a performance by the Polynesian dance troupe Velapa, Chow said.

Following the song and dance performances will be a stage play titled “Black Hotel,” a comedy about burglars who have the tables turned on them by their prospective victims, who happened to be martial arts experts, Chow said. The play will be performed by Impact, a theater group made up of members of the San Fernando Valley Chinese Culture Assn.

The show will include a Chinese martial arts demonstration and a series of Chinese folk songs, performed by the Melodia Sinica Chorus.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center, located on the east side of the campus.

Admission costs $10. Children under 6 will not be admitted. For tickets and other information, call (818) 677-2600.
