About 400 elementary school students gathered at Hansen Dam Recreation Area on Friday to learn about Native American culture as part of the fourth annual Los Angeles Intertribal Pow Wow.

Saginaw Grant, who will serve as this year’s emcee, told students about the history of Native Americans.

“The powwow is about nurturing a spirit of generosity and caring among people,” Grant said later. “It’s important for the children to know that Indians are not just people who existed in the past, but are a contemporary people.”

Casey Camp, a member of the Ponca nation, answered children’s questions about tribal customs, such as marriage ceremonies. After her presentation, many children gathered around to ask for Camp’s autograph.

“I just hope that if my children come into contact with these children, there will be a mutual respect for each other’s culture,” she said.

The children’s event Friday was a preview of the weekend’s activities.

The powwow will be held today from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the recreation area at 11075 Foothill Blvd.

Admission costs $6 for adults. The cost is $4 for seniors 65 and older and children under 12. Children under 5 may attend for free.
