A Ventura man wanted in connection with a 1997 theft case was arrested Friday on suspicion of attacking a police officer and resisting arrest.

Officers received a tip at 3 p.m. that Javier Lopez Hernandez was staying at a friend’s house on the 500 block of Cedar Street. A warrant had been issued for his arrest two weeks ago, and his picture was publicized by media earlier this week.

As officers approached the home, they spotted 23-year-old Grace Polk, who ran toward her house and yelled a warning to Hernandez, according to the Ventura Police Department.

Hernandez, 33, tried to flee out a window, but officers had the home surrounded, police said. During his arrest, Hernandez allegedly attacked an officer and, when a second officer tried to step in, Polk attacked that officer from behind, authorities said.

Hernandez, a convicted burglar, was jailed without bail on suspicion of being a wanted felon. Polk was arrested on suspicion of harboring a felon, assault on a peace officer and obstructing an officer.
