Joseph A. Niederst, a 12-year Ventura resident, died Friday. He was 87.

Niederst was born March 21, 1911, in Pittsburgh. He moved to Ventura from Las Vegas in 1986.

For 38 years, Niederst was a production planning supervisor for Jones and Laughlin Steel Co., in Pittsburgh. He also worked as a stadium usher for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers for more than 40 years.

Niederst attended St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa. During World War II, he served as a pharmacist’s assistant in the U.S. Navy.

Niederst was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 60 years, Mildred, who died last August.

Niederst is survived by a son, Joe Niederst of Ventura; a daughter, Beth Starkweather of Pinole; a sister, Elma C. Niederst of Pittsburgh; and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Joseph Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Ventura. Interment will follow at Santa Clara Cemetery in Oxnard.
