Mitzi Lazarus was so moved by a story about a retiring police dog in another city that she moved her club to action. Last month, the Junior Women’s Club of Orange donated $8,000 to the Orange Police Department for its K-9 program, the fruits of a two-year fund-raising campaign. Lt. John Higley said the department was especially grateful because it is retiring one of its three dogs. Replacing police dogs is an elaborate and expensive task--the trained German shepherds are imported from Germany or Czechoslovakia. The new dog will start visiting community groups and schools in early 1999. The first stop on its itinerary: the Junior Women’s Club, formed in 1978 to work on civic affairs. The donation was made in memory of longtime member Shirley Sergent. For more information on the club, call Cori Lalande at (714) 974-1524.
