Farmer Moving Up the Record Lists

Share

The clutch catches have been obvious, but Danny Farmer has at the same time worked his way up the UCLA receiving record lists, even with four games this season and all of 1999 left in his UCLA career.

After starting this season 16th in catches and 13th in yards, the junior flanker has climbed to sixth and seventh, respectively, and is on path to break both marks by the end of his senior season. Another major jump could come Saturday at Washington--Farmer, averaging 96.5 yards a game, needs 85 to pass Mike Sherrard, Willie Anderson, Sean LaChapelle and predecessor Jim McElroy and move into third place on the all-time yardage list.

“I’m not into the numbers,” Farmer said. “I haven’t done anything yet. I haven’t been to a Rose Bowl. I haven’t won a major bowl like the Rose Bowl or the Fiesta Bowl. Those are my goals.

“I don’t really think about [the rankings]. I’m just happy I have a couple more games left this year and another season.”

Farmer recorded his fourth 100-yard game of the season last Saturday, getting 113 in five catches at Oregon State. That boosted his average to the 96.5, third-best in the conference.

“He is such a clutch performer,” Coach Bob Toledo said. “I don’t know what other way to say it.”

The touchdown in Corvallis gave DeShaun Foster six rushing scores, already the most ever by a Bruin true freshman with several more opportunities likely to come. Skip Hicks, Shawn Wills and Gaston Green each had five. . . . DuVal Hicks and Cheyane Caldwell have been named captains for the Washington game, a reward for their play on special teams. They join the season-long choices, Cade McNown and Larry Atkins.
