Did Smith Misstep?

Share

According to a Calendar cover line, “Will Smith hasn’t made a bad career move yet” (“The Prince Who Would Be King,” by Eric Harrison, Nov. 8). In 1993, when Smith starred as a bisexual con man in “Six Degrees of Separation,” he refused to shoot an on-screen kiss with co-star Anthony Michael Hall. This refusal attracted media attention at the time and sent out a dangerous message, especially to young people who idolize Smith: that physical affection between two men is unacceptable, wrong and must be avoided at all costs. Smith’s irresponsible decision promoted homophobia and intolerance and is very much a bad career move.
