The death toll from flooding in Vietnam has reached 151, government officials said Thursday, with tropical storm Elvis worsening the situation.

Provincial officials in central Vietnam said water levels in rivers were rising fast as Elvis dumped up to 6 inches of rain on one of the country’s poorest regions between Wednesday night and noon Thursday.

Low-lying areas where water had just receded from last weekend’s Typhoon Dawn were expected to be flooded again Thursday night, officials said.

The Central Floods and Storms Control Department said Wednesday that damage by flooding from Dawn--the worst in some areas since 1964--is estimated at $30 million, but the figure may rise.

Central Vietnam is prone to typhoons, storms and floods. Two previous floods in the last month killed 69 people.
