Optimism Precedes Coalition Talks

Gerhard Schroeder said coalition talks opening today in Bonn with the left-wing Greens party should lead to his confirmation as German chancellor by parliament on Oct. 27. Schroeder, whose Social Democratic Party beat out Helmut Kohl’s Christian Democratic Union in Sunday’s general election, said initial contacts with the Greens had unfolded in a “friendly atmosphere.” The Greens want to head four ministries and appear ready to be tough negotiators.
