Congress Approves $44.7 Million for Flood Control
Congress recently approved U.S. Rep. Christopher Cox’s request for $44.7 million in Orange County flood protection and upper Newport Bay ecosystem protection.
The funds, part of the federal Energy and Water Development bill, received approval from the House of Representatives on Monday, and the Senate on Tuesday. President Clinton is expected to sign the bill within days.
“We’ve been working to improve flood control on the Santa Ana River--what the Army Corps of Engineers has called the most serious flood threat west of the Mississippi--since I joined the House Public Works Committee and testified on behalf of the project’s first construction funding in 1989,” said Cox, (R-Newport Beach).
The $44.7 million will help finish the Seven Oaks Dam and improve the Prado Dam, Cox said.
The same bill also will send $350,000 to upper Newport Bay to fund studies necessary to continue use of a nearby disposal area for dredging materials. Another $392,000 will go to Newport Bay and San Diego Creek for studies into long-term measures to protect endangered species.
