Massacre Survivor Dies of Wounds in Mexico Hospital
An alleged drug trafficker who survived the massacre of his extended family last month died Friday of complications from two bullet wounds he suffered in the attack, police said.
State Police Cmdr. Cesar Beltran Lopez said Fermin Castro died in a hospital in the Baja California state town of Ensenada.
Eighteen members of Castro’s extended family were roused from their beds Sept. 17 by gunmen who lined them up against a wall in the small Indian community of El Sauzal and opened fire with automatic weapons.
Police said Castro, who appeared to be the main target, was shot in the head and was in a coma until the end.
Castro’s body was turned over to the morgue for an autopsy, Beltran was quoted as saying by the government news agency Notimex.
Federal agents have arrested four more suspects in connection with the massacre, bringing to 14 the number of people in custody.
Judicial police captured the suspects Thursday in a series of raids on homes and businesses in Ensenada, the daily La Jornada reported.
