Lecture Series to Begin This Week

An eight-week lecture series at Oxnard College on such subjects as critical thinking, the Japanese economy and one of the first professional Latina photographers will begin this week.

From noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, there will be a multicultural poetry reading on the lawn next to the college’s cafeteria.

The remaining programs are scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. on successive Wednesdays in the Letters and Sciences lecture hall, also known as the Clock Tower Lecture Hall.

On Oct. 14, anthropology instructor Linda Kamalia will speak on “Dogs, Cats & Elephants: An Anthropological Study.” On Oct. 21, history instructor Scott Corbett will discuss Japan’s economic crisis and its impact on the United States.

On Oct. 28, English instructor Anthony Rodriguez will speak on the poems of Walt Whitman, and on Nov. 4, philosophy instructor Chris Horrock will discuss critical thinking in regard to elections, marketing and the media.

On Nov. 11, Spanish instructor Marta Garza-Laird will speak on “Rosario Castellanos: A Readers’ Theatre,” which will include dramatic readings by Oxnard College students.

On Nov. 18, college librarian Harmony Rodriguez will read selections from women’s autobiographies, and on Nov. 25, English instructor Elaine Alarcon-Totten will speak on Tina Maditti, one of the first Latina professional photographers.

The final lecture is scheduled for Dec. 2 with a lecture on reexamining relationships. That lecture is titled, “The Continuing Saga of Life Transformations.”
