City Considering Cable Offer for Show
The City Council is considering whether to accept $22,000 from cable television companies to start another live television call-in show.
Under the proposal, Jones Intercable and GTE would pay a combined $22,000 each year to help the city produce the show on Channel 17, said David Keith, Oxnard’s community services officer. The council is expected to approve the deal next week.
Jones Intercable, which has been providing cable TV services to Oxnard for 15 years, is required by its city contract to produce community programming.
For 13 years, the Oxnard Police Department and Jones Intercable have produced “Street Beat,” a weekly crime-prevention show taped at the Jones Intercable studio.
But when GTE moved in and began competing with Jones Intercable, a deal was made with both cable companies for the city to produce its own shows with financial help from Jones and GTE.
As part of the deal, a new show, “City Beat,” will be added to the lineup of live call-in shows produced by the city on local issues. Others shows include “Fireline,” about Fire Department issues, and “Environment Today.” The shows will be taped in the City Hall council chambers.
The new show could air as soon as November, Keith said.
