About 4,000 people are expected to participate Sunday in the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation’s Walk to Cure Diabetes at UC Irvine.
Last year, about 3,550 walkers and 20 corporate sponsors raised $487,000 for research. This year, the foundation aims to raise $600,000.
Quest Diagnostics Nichols Institute is the presenting sponsor for this year’s walk.
It is estimated that more than 100 million people worldwide have diabetes. About 16 million of them live in the United States, with about 200,000 residing in Orange County.
An estimated 179,000 Americans will die from the disease and its complications this year alone, said Ann Swift-Hough, a foundation spokeswoman.
