A 10-mile oil spill that killed dozens of birds and threatened a marine sanctuary has been cleaned up, leaving authorities to concentrate on investigating who caused the spill.

Crews picked up about 9,200 pounds of tar balls and other oily debris from beaches south of San Francisco, and about 1,300 gallons of oil were skimmed from the ocean after the spill was noticed just outside San Francisco Bay last week.

Four dead birds were found Sunday, bringing the total to 89. Seventy birds that were injured by the spill are being rehabilitated at the Marine Wildlife Veterinary Care and Research Center in Santa Cruz.
