Lawmakers in Baja California on Wednesday selected Alejandro Gonzalez Alcocer, the state chairman of the National Action Party, to serve as governor after the death of Gov. Hector Teran Teran.

Gonzalez Alcocer, 47, will complete the final three years of Teran’s six-year term. Teran died Sunday of an apparent heart attack at his home in Mexicali.

The midday vote in the state capital of Mexicali was 24 to 0, with one abstention, according to a spokeswoman for the Baja state government.

The selection capped two days of frenetic back room talks among leaders of the three political parties represented in the state congress. The next gubernatorial election is scheduled for 2001.
