Profile of a Baby Abductor
After analyzing 171 cases of infant abductions, most of them from hospitals, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has developed an abductor’s profile. But officials there warn that not all abductors, of course, will fit the profile.
Abductors are more often women than men. They are likely to be overweight and range in age from 12 to 50. Often, an abductor will be incapable of having her own children or may have lost a baby.
Often, an abductor visits nursery and maternity units at more than one hospital. She may ask numerous questions about procedures, the layout of the unit and other details.
An abductor typically plans the baby snatching, but she often does not have a specific infant in mind. She is more likely to seize any opportunity.
Abductors often impersonate a nurse or other health care provider.
